John “Jack” Francis Muldoon, Ph.D., M.P.H. a resident of The Moorings in Arlington Heights, passed away on January 6, 2015, due to complications from a stroke. He was 89.
Jack was born in the Bronx on November 16, 1925 to Alicia and Edward Muldoon, one of four children. Following high school, he enlisted in the Army Air Corp, serving stateside as a bombsight mechanic. After honorable discharge, he moved to Washington DC where he completed Bachelors and Masters degrees at Catholic University, with membership in Phi Beta Kappa. There he met his future wife Mary Eileen McDonald of Scranton. He spent three years as a novice in St. Anselm Abbey, but after prayerful consideration, left the Abbey, married Mary, moved to Baltimore and completed his Ph.D. in Psychology at the University of Maryland. His first position was with the VA hospital in Pittsburgh, PA, when he also earned a Masters of Public Health degree from the University of Pittsburgh. He went on to co-found Craig House-Technoma Workshop, a program and school for severely disturbed teenagers. In 1973 he moved the family to Daytona Beach where he was Executive Director of Community Mental Health at Halifax Hospital and the affiliated Guidance Center. In 1975 he and Mary moved to Chicago where he spent the next 25 years as Executive Director of the Community Mental Health Center of Ravenswood Hospital. He also served as the Chicago Cluster faculty advisor for the Fielding Institute of Santa Barbara, where he guided the coursework and research of numerous mid-career doctoral students. He retired from full time work in 1995. He enjoyed photography, computer programming, gardening and car maintenance.
Jack is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary McDonald Muldoon; his daughter Mary (Dan) Leopold of St. Louis, MO; his sister Eleanor Thomas of Crystal Springs, FL; his sons Sean Muldoon of Louisville KY, and Matt (Margie) Muldoon of Pittsburgh, PA; and his eight cherished grandchildren.
Visitation Friday, January 9, 2015, from 2 until 5 p.m. at Friedrichs Funeral home, 320 W. Central Rd, at Northwest Hwy., Mt Prospect, Illinois 60056. Visitation also Saturday, January 10, 2015, from 10:30 a.m. until time of Mass 11:30 a.m. at St. Raymond de Penafort Church, Elmhurst Rd. (Rt.83) at Lincoln St, Mt Prospect, Illinois 60056. Interment is private.
